Reviews like those accompanying mine are the reason that I now read online reviews AFTER I have already made my purchase.
I went shopping for a theater in a box because this item is intended for a NON-AUDIOPHILE, technically UNSAVVY friend of mine with a child. I didn't want to spend more than 0.00 on something that runs the risk of being abused. My friend doesn't care about a progressive scan feature and will never miss it if it isn't activated. She will also likely find the simplicity of the remote (which I do agree, lacks appeal) just that... simple. But a shotty 0.00 KOSS system simply wouldn't do. I mean.. I will have to listen to this thing from time to time, right? So I went to Best Buy, Circuit City and Good Guys and auditioned every single unit under 0.00 with a couple of CDs that I burned myself.
Bottom line: You will not get better audio quality matched with an on-board DVD player at this price range. Not to mention that, aesthetically, it does well for itself. I have had no problem playing all sorts of DVDs (though I haven't tried any that I burned myself). Of course, I keep my Dvds clean and only try to use region 1. All rentals have played with no problem and older Dvds,even slightly scratched, played without a hitch as well.

Want to distance the speakers a bit further than the supplied cable? Invest in a wire stripper and a .00 bag of wire connectors at "The Shack" you'll be fine... really.

Samsung HT-DB600 5-Disc DVD Home Theater System Customer Review

I got this @ Best Buy when it first came out. I was looking @ a sony but they didn't have speaker wires with it(open box item) and I asked the guy @ Circuit City if he could call Sony and find out how I could get them and how much it would cost me. It was 55mins later and the guy was pissed. He waited that long to find out that Sony was going to charge me as much for the wires as he was charhing me for the system! (Sony had special speaker wires)
Anyway I booked it to Best Buy and there it was the HT-DB600. I was impressed with the design and it was easy to use @ the store. I looked @ the other systems but they all cost more. It had the same watts as the other ones too. I got it and was eager to hook it up.
I took it out of the box and looked @ the instructions and I was done putting it together in about one hr. Like I said I never hooked up something like this but it was real easy. I have an HD tv and Xbox with all the stuff to make it HD and a sony VCR and A HD samsung direct tv reciever. It was pretty easy to get all hooked up to the surround system and everything had sound.
I have not had any problems with it scratching up discs or dvds or taking to long to load.(a sony playstation 2 takes longer to load) I've had this for 2 years now.
I got used to the remote for it but it didn't work with my tv so i just got a universal remote.( make sure when you get a universal remote you put all options the old one had otherwise you'll be even more frusterated)
Overall this is a pretty cool system. I live in an apartment so I can't have too much power but I still piss off the neighbors. It looks cool on the outside and it's not too tall so it can fit inside your entertainment center if you have one.
You can also save pictures on it so when you are waiting for it to load, you have a picture you can look at. I thought that was pretty cool.
I would recomend this to all who first start out and want to pay less for something that they can use for a while and understand how everything works. I'll be going back to Samsung to get more products in the future.

It was easy to set-up, just took my time and followed the directions. The bass doesn't shake the walls, although I guess if it was turned up loud enough it would. I thought my Samsung TV had great sound, but after installing this I learned what a great sound is. I'm glad I got this 500 watt system, the newer 100 watt system would have been to much for me.
Blu-ray DVDs look exceptional. The DVD player also upgrades regular DVDs to near HD. They look good also. Depending on the DVD they look as good as the Blu-ray.
I particularly liked the wireless rear speakers. Although there is a rear amp with two sets of speaker wires, it sure beats having to run wires fron the front system to the rear. I have the rear amp/receiver setting behind a chair and the signal is still strong. No problems with over the air reception.
I highly recommend this system.

first thing to do is do not hook up direcly to your tv with the optical cable, this will not give you the best sound from this sound bar. this is why every person is having very low sound. i have a samsung 1600 bluray player with the optical cable in and the other end hooked in to the sound bar. i then went into the bluray set up menu and changed the audio seting to bistream (audio phile) when i did this it will give you the best sound. set up this way it is louder then my tv speakers i have a samsung ln46b750 lcd. hope this helps for people who are having weak sound from the sound bar. i was ready to send it back till i set this up this way. way better sounding now this way.

Very nice system - 3 screws hold the speakers to their base and 1 screw hold the top speaker in place - Rear wireless speaker system worked like a charm on first hookup - have not had them go out like others have had.
Would have preferrered RCA cables for the speakers instead of bare wiress which makes swapping another DVD player impossible unless you want to splice. With this system I have to have have 2 DVD players turned on to watch Blu-ray ones. This one has an optical input which comes directly from my TV. So to watch a Blu-Ray I have to have both DVD players turned on. Annoying but not a deal breaker. Also the 5-disk DVD player that came with this unit is 16 inches long and does not fit in my TV stand which has glass doors on the front. I will have to cut out the cheap carboard back of it to have it sit in. The wireless card adds another 2 inches or so as it sticks out the back of the unit. Minor things on a fantastic system. I would still buy it again.

This sound bar works very well as an intermediate audio solution for my bedroom 50" Samsung plasma. It's far better than the built-in speakers, but not as great as my 7.1 surround component A/V system in the living room. So far, this is the same as the other reviews. I'm writing to add two data points to the areas that seem to be up in the air:

1. Subwoofer disconnect and hum: I don't seem to have these issues with my unit. Bass is great.

2. Stand-by light won't turn off: This is true. I was sure the other reviewers somehow missed it, maybe they didn't want to leave the sound bar on, maybe they didn't turn off the auto power link, but no dice. Once the TV is off, the sound bar goes into stand-by after 20 minutes, and that light comes on. Period.

However, the light isn't a big deal. This sound bar brings the bedroom TV and movie viewing experience up to an acceptable substitute level, and I'm very satisfied. This is a good full-featured 5.1 home theatre system. I particularly like the wireless rear speakers. To be certain, there are no wires from the main unit to the back speakers, but there are wires that run from the rear speaker amp to each rear speaker. The speakers are small but deliver excellent sound and a decent sub-woofer, though not as powerful as some might like. I particularly like the fact that the main unit has a optical digital cable in port so you can play surround sound tv shows on it. It is an excellent value for the money.

I recently bought the 40" Samsung LCD HDTV and bought this home theater system to compliment it. Initially, I could only get sound through the theater speakers while playing a DVD. After some experimentation, I was able to use the home stereo speakers with the TV. The theater is excellent. My only complaint, and a very, very minor one, there is no control on the woofer, so the base comes in a little strong at times. As to the sturdiness of the system, I originally had one speaker sitting on a shelf about head high. The first DVD we watched had a shoot-out scene with base so heavy it blew the speaker off the shelf to a wooden floor below. The speaker was not damaged (but is now hung more securely!)
I am very satisfied with the system and at 9, it's a steal.

These discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding such as this system provides is required for full sonic appreciation.

The HT-DB390 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Auxiliary audio/video inputs let you connect additional components like your VCR to the system.

I bought this a few months ago and the sound is great. I read some prior reviews regarding the bass, and it is adjustable -- you can even disable the subwoofer off. The only problem I had was that the remote stopped working properly about a month after I got it. It would turn my samsung t.v. on/off, but would not control any of the speaker/dvd functions. I contacted Samsung and they sent a new remote in about two weeks or so (give or take). The new remote didn't work either. So, I contacted Samsung again, and they arranged to have me ship the unit to a repair facility. They emailed me a ups shipment label, which saved me shipping costs, although I still had to buy a box, which costs about .00 (its a big piece). I just received the speaker back after about 1.5 weeks, and it seems to work fine now. Bottom line, the speaker works well -- the sound is great and the movie quality is impressive -- but beware of faulty remotes. No complaints about the service other than having to pay for the box.

This is a great surround system for the price. Bought it for my parents for Christmas (early christmas for us) and they love it. All of the features worked well if not above expectations. Don't know about the upconverting as they don't have a 1080p tv. The sound is awsome. There downstairs is about 14'wide by 30' long and it fills the space with great sound. Watched the new Star Trek on it and the bass will rumble you, the speaking parts come trough clear from the center speaker. If you want a system that does everything except play blue ray this is it. The speaker cords for the surround sound are very long. Ran it at least 20' with more to spare. Great little system. Been working for about 1 month.

After being tempted by other brand HTIB products I settled with this LG because of the feedback on the easy-to-use features such as Netflix and Pandora. Despite the fact it arrived with a big damage to the top casing it was easy to install and it sounds GREAT!
An Ethernet cable on the back and I'm using Netflix, listening to Pandora, and watching YouTube videos right there...in my TV! That's what I call "convenience".
I bought my first Blue-Ray disc to test the whole thing and I went with "Terminator Salvation". As soon as the credits on the movie started you should see my jaw drop with enthusiasm. Then came the explosions on the movie and you could feel the vibration coming out of the system. I love it!
Picture quality is excellent and my old DVD's look much better on this system.
This may be a stupid note but I though the tower speakers were rear surround speakers as there was no set up picture posted online. Luckily they worked out well under my TV with the two "small" surround speakers behind the couch.
Overall, this is a great LG product for the price with a convenience factor that may appeal to smart buyers.

Samsung HT-P1200 5.1 Channel Home Theater System Customer Review

My husband got cancer so we got a home theater system. What else would you do if you expect to spend a great portion of the next six months at home on the sofa? Mind you, the New York winter in itself provides a pretty good excuse to stay in.

Now, I've never been one for gimmicks, preferring to dive into a good book anytime, but I must admit that this thing is fabulous. With my husband clearly unable to handle anything remotely heavy, I had to do most of the setting up. It took us about 40 minutes in total, and only because I'm nitpicky - those screws better be tight. Linking all the bits together was a piece of cake. We placed the speakers in their relevant positions and, wham, we had serious sound.

I've been told that this isn't the top of the range, but as far as my ears can tell, it's great. The subwoofer makes your floor tremble (and the dog sit up), and the speakers are elegant enough not be intrusive in the room (even when the room is not that big). It makes DVD watching a fantastic experience - better, almost, than being in the cinema. So, of course, we got totally hooked on DVD series. I never thought I would get into LOST, but how can you not when the gentle crash of waves on the beach rumbles in the background while Sawyer has his little hissy fit.

Many of our DVDs are from other regions (the result of moving way too often), but it was very easy to decode the system to allow it to play other DVDs (isn't the Internet wonderful?). Now, we can play all our DVDs, and music CDs, and even plug in our iPod to play music through this system. You beauty. The only thing it has refused to play so far is video CDs.

In short, if you plan to re-visit the 1980s by watching McGuyver, V, 21 Jumpstreet and a host of other DVDs ... you can't do much better than this in terms of value for money.

I purchased this Samsung sound bar because of it's size and thickness after hanging my Samsung 55" LED above my fireplace. I used to use the Yamaha YSP-1000 sound bar. That is one highly rated soundbar. As for the Samsung, it is not bad, plugged it in and it paired with the sub and we were enjoying better sound than we get from our TV, and my wife and I find it loud enough, sound quality is decent, even has a bit of punch from the wireless sub-woofer which has no volume control. Very asthetic looking and blends with the TV real nice. I do not understand some of the bashing I have read about this speaker. You get what you pay for. Samsung 9 Yamaha YSP 99. However if you want 5.1 surround, 120W of power, lots of options for you listening pleasure and an awesome sound then buy the Yamaha YSP sound bar.

Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package Customer Review

These speakers are a great value at around 100 dollars. They work great and sound amazing for small speakers. The sub is has its own volume control and I have yet to turn it past a quarter of the way up because the thumping, clear base shakes the house fairly well.
The only issues with this system are minor. First the speaker wire is only about a 24 gauge, which for small rooms is perfectly fine. On a positive note there is 100ft of this wire included. The only other minor problem is they are 6 ohm speakers. Most receivers will have an option for running this so it's a fairly simple fix.
So this is a perfect set for people on a budget but in want of great surround sound for a small to medium sized room. These would even work well in a large room as long as you aren't trying to blast the speaker volume loud enough to wake the neighbors.

I have been looking at soundbar systems for over a year now. It all started when I decided to add an Xbox360 and a blu-ray player to my home setup. I had a specific setup and a specific list of issues I was trying to resolve and I ended up getting a full 5.1 surround system to go with my blu-ray. It was pretty good, but then we decided to move into a new place and the tv had to go in a cutout above the fireplace. This created a problem because I didn't want to run wires all over the place and there was no way to get wires run out of the fireplace cutout without putting a hole in the wall...so, these are the issues I finally ended up needed to address:

1. I needed something that would sit in front of my TV, but not be too big because it would block the view of the bottom of the screen (the TV is a little high up)
2. I needed something that would generate a better range of sound than my tv's built-in speakers (I often have trouble hearing what people are saying, especially when there's other sounds in the show or if there's background noise like my kids or my dishwasher running etc...)
3. I needed something that would generate more volume than my tv's built-in speakers (again, just want to be able to turn it out without the sound turning to crap).
4. I needed something that would put out some bass.
5. I needed something with a digital audio interface (so either optical audio or HDMI) because analog audio sounds like garbage and picks up a lot of noise from interference.
6. I didn't want to spend 0+.

So, I looked at several systems. Most of the soundbars are small enough to sit in front of my TV without blocking my view, but some of them were very big...so I eliminated them from my list. Almost all of the soundbars had better sound than my built-in TV, but I crossed the cheap-o brands off of my list. Again, volume wasn't an issue...in-store testing revealed that all of the soundbar systems available put out quite a bit more sound than my TV without any loss of quality. And again, any soundbar with an active subwoofer generate a lot more bass than my tv, but I did have an issue putting a sub up on the shelf behind my TV. A lot of these systems have an infrared receiver for use with a remote control, and several of them put it on the subwoofer. For me to use that I would have to put the subwoofer on the floor and run a cable up to the TV/Soundbar...which isn't an options for me. So I narrowed my search to system with a wireless subwoofer. The digital audio interface was a little trickier, several of the soundbars only have analog inputs (either the Red/White RCA connection or the miniplug headphone connection). This is fine if you just to hookup an ipod or something like that, but if you want it to process any digital audio (like PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS) then you need either an optical connection or an HDMI connection. I crossed a few more off the list. The price was the biggest differentiator...there are a handful of decent soundbars under 0...and then there's a rather big jump to 0 & 0+...I don't see any reason to spend this much money on a soundbar unless you absolutely have to. That much money would be better spent installing a full surround system if you can.

So, taking all this into consideration, I ended up looking at the Samsung HT-WS1R. It is listed at 0 and comes in either Red or Grey. I went in to my local best-buy and they happened to have a Red model open box for 0. I had been waiting a long time to pull the trigger on this decision, and I decided to go for it.

A couple points:
1. The best-buy salesperson told me it was a 3.1 system...it is NOT. It is a 2.1 system, which mean it has two speakers and one subwoofer. A 3.1 system will tend to give you better stereo separation (sound moves from left to right when the car goes driving by on the tv) and the center channel will give better vocal range for voices...but in a small soundbar like this you'd hardly notice.
2. The best-buy salesperson also tried to sell me a optical cable. My friend who was with me told me he had one so I didn't buy one, but when I got it home and opened the box I found that it came with a nice optical cable...so you don't need to buy anything for this to work.

The Results:

So I got this home and had it hooked up in under 30 minutes. Be careful connecting the optical cable...there are little rubber caps on the end of the cable that need to be removed, and on mine they were clear so i didn't see them...might have done some damage if I hadn't noticed.

This unit easily met all of my requirements. The volume is much greater than my TV. It is a LOT easier to understand voices. The sub puts out a lot of good, solid bass (really adds to the drama of movies etc...). It looks good, and it all fits the way I want. I put the sub on the floor next to the fireplace and it's creating great sound. I might move it behind the couch and see how that sounds.

Pros:
1. Good value for the money
2. Looks very nice
3. Easy hookup
4. Great sound (quality and volume)

Cons:
1. Can't adjust sub output. (not directly at least. The soundbar has 3 audio modes, News, Cinema, and Music. It also has Passthrough which just plays it how it gets it from the TV...so you can adjust the levels on your TV if you want)
2. Had some issues getting my logitech harmony remote to control this unit, but got that sorted by programming the remote directly using Raw commands.
3. Doesn't have HDMI pass-through which would be nice if I wanted to connect multiple devices directly to this system, but my TV has 3 so I just use the TV to pass the digital audio to the soundbar and it works great.

So, if you're in my position or something similar this is a great buy. I haven't had any issues with sound quality, volume, or subwoofer cut-out. The reviewers that claim that this puts out less volume than their TV must have set this up wrong because it puts out A LOT of volume...I can't turn it up all the way because it would be way too loud...I turn it up to about 4 out of 8.

If you don't have a universal remote and want to hook a bunch of HDMI devices to a TV that only has one or two HDMI inputs, you should look at the Sony HTCT-100 or HTCT-500. They both have multimple HDMI inputs and the subwoofer acts like an AV Receives, so you can control your inputs using it. But, it is not a wireless subwoofer so it will have to have a physical connection to the TV and the Soundbar.

When I went out to look for a home theater system I never expected to be bring something like this unit home. It is a bit overwhelming for my home, but I wanted something fantastic to go with the 52 inch Sony Plasma I had recently purchaced also.
It has 1000 watts of power-wow-4 tall boy speakers that I can jam in the corners of the apartment. It is a 5.1 channel, one DVD at a time, CD/CD-R/CD-RW, DVD/DVD±R/DVD±RW. I can also plug my MP3 player into the front of the unit and my Ipod to play music. It also has a JPEG viewer (haven't got to that yet) The subwoofer is small, heavy and blasts the floor until it shakes.
It was really simple to put together. Instructions were good (a grade schooler can get to know the functions easy) I have a HDMI input from the receiver to the TV, so the picture is wonderful too.
I also like the idea that it is wireless ready.
To my liking, I rate it a 4--it was a bit expensive, but I made the choice.
